Virus: The microscopic enemy... by Zach Fuchs

What is a virus?

A virus is a parasitic microscopic organism. It consists of a strand of DNA or RNA surrounded by a protective protein coat. It takes over an innocent cell and uses the cell's resources for its own purpose. Viruses vary dramatically in size and shape, as can be seen at left.

The Future...
Fortunately, new treatments for viruses are in the making as we speak. One technology,
Photogen,

is able to target the infected area with a laser-activated drug. This would annihilate any virus in the immediate area. Some believe that a virus could deliver a cure, or strand of DNA, to an ill cell. This would make the cell into a "good-virus factory".
